Game Story

PLATT AND MCCALLUM CONNECT TWICE TO SECURE WIN FOR HAWKS

LEE BOYADJIAN

MORDEN, Man. – Brooklyn Platt and MacKenzie McCallum had a special connection Tuesday night, combining to score the first and second goals in the Pembina Valley Hawks' 4-1 win over the Durham West Lightning at the 2017 Esso Cup.

Play bounced back and forth between the Hawks and Lightning for most of the first period, but near the end of the opening frame Platt rushed into the Lightning zone. Her shot rebounded off Victoria Kelaiditis’ blockerand dropped right in front of McCallum, who dumped it into the open net.

Along with left winger Hannah Petrie, Platt and McCallum continued to cause problems for Durham West. Near the eight-minute mark of the second period, the trio forced a turnover deep in the Lightning zone. McCallum, from inside the circle, fed Platt in the slot for an easy finish and 2-0 lead.

But Durham West would have an answer before the end of the period. Hawks goaltender Halle Oswald stopped one rush by the Lightning, but couldn’t withstand the second attack. MacKenzie MacDonald carried in from the neutral zone and scored five-hole on Oswald, cutting the lead in half.

The score remained 2-1 into the third period, when Durham West got caught on its heels. Katelyn Heppner carried the puck to below the face-off circle and sent a backhand in on Kelaiditis. It fooled the goaltender, beating her high on the short side. The insurance marker made it 3-1 Hawks, giving the hosts their first multi-goal lead of the Esso Cup.

Pembina Valley would add to its total late in the third on the power play. Kenzie Heide took a blast from the point and Petrie managed to get a stick on it for a nicely-executed deflection.

With just two days left in the preliminary round, securing points is becoming far more important. In the afternoon of Day 4, Durham West meets the Mid-Isle Wildcats at 3:30 p.m. CT. Pembina Valley meets the Harfangs du Triolet, two teams with two wins and looking for a chance to move up the standings. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. CT.
