2008 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge

United States 2 - Germany 4

GERMANS SHOCK TEAM USA WITH 4-2 WIN

London, ON – Philipp Grubauer had just three words.

“It’s a dream.”

The 16-year-old goaltender of Team Germany was the star on Tuesday afternoon at John Labatt Centre, making 42 saves and leading Germany to one of its biggest wins in international hockey. The Germans beat Team USA 4-2 in what will be one of the most memorable moments of the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Grubauer was sensational from start to finish and the Germans hung around long enough and took advantage of their chances in the third. Germany trailed 2-1 going into the third period before scoring three goals.

The game-winning goal came at 13:34 on a 2-on-1 and was set up by the son of Germany’s most-famous hockey player. Tom Kuhnhackl, the son of Erich, who was chosen as Germany’s top hockey player of the 20th century, made a great pass to Norman Hauner, whose shot beat Team USA goaltender Adam Murray.

The goal, which made it 3-2, sent the large New Year’s Day gathering to its feet at the JLC. Germany later added an empty-net goal.

The fans in attendance saved their loudest cheers for after the game, when Grubauer was named Germany’s player of the game.

Uwe Krupp, who played more than 700 games in the NHL, went down to Team Germany’s dressing room after the game to congratulate the players. Krupp’s son Bjorn is a member of Team USA.

This win was the first by Germany at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge since 2004.

Team USA, which outshout Germany 44-22, had already clinched first in Pool B.
