2011 World Sport School Challenge

Shattuck-St. Mary's 9 - Slovakia 3

STEPAN’S FIVE POINTS LEAD SHATTUCK-ST. MARY’S IN ROUT

CALGARY, Alta. – Zach Stepan stole the show for Shattuck-St. Mary’s on Tuesday afternoon at the 2011 World Sport School Challenge, scoring four times and adding an assist as the Sabres hammered Slovakia 9-3.

After a last-second loss to Okanagan Hockey Academy in its opener on Monday, Shattuck got itself an early lead when Noah Henry capitalized on a power play opportunity just 2:54, the lone goal in a period that saw the Sabres outshoot Slovakia 15-7.

The floodgates opened in the second period, with the two teams combining for seven goals. The Slovaks tied the game 2:01 into the middle frame on a goal by Robert Lantosi, but Stepan replied with two goals in 11 seconds to give the American school a 3-1 advantage.

Tomas Torok cut the Shattuck lead in half, but a trio of goals from the Sabres before the end of the second – including Stepan’s hat trick marker – sent them to the dressing room with a commanding 6-2 lead through 40 minutes.

Slovakia came out with jump in the third period, making it a 6-3 game thanks to Lantosi, but Truman Reed, Carter Lukenda and Stepan rounded out the scoring, giving Shattuck the win by an unconverted touchdown.

Shattuck outshot Slovakia 18-6 in the final frame and 53-28 overall, with Anthony Brodeur, son of Canadian Olympic gold medallist Martin Brodeur, recording his first win of the tournament in the Sabres’ goal.

Nick Petrella and Jake Montgomery added three assists each for Shattuck, while Tomas Torok had his second consecutive three-point outing for Slovakia.

Shattuck looks to continue its offensive roll as it closes preliminary play against Finland on Wednesday night (5 p.m. MT), while Slovakia will look to get back into the win column against Pursuit of Excellence in Wednesday’s afternoon contest (1:30 p.m. MT).
