Shattuck-St. Mary's 3 - Finland 4

FINNS SURVIVE SCARE FROM SHATTUCK, FINISH PRELIMS PERFECT

CALGARY, Alta. – Saku Kinnunen scored shorthanded with eight minutes to go, giving Finland a 4-3 victory over Shattuck-St. Mary’s and wrapping up a perfect preliminary round at the 2011 World Sport School Challenge.

The win means the Finns will enjoy a bye Thursday and play in a Friday semifinal, while Shattuck will take on Pursuit of Excellence in Thursday’s late quarter-final (5 p.m. MT).

Special teams were the story for both teams, with five of the game’s seven goals scored either on the power play or shorthanded, including Shattuck’s two first period goals, from Hunter Fejes and Zach Stepan, that gave it a surprising 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

But the Finns showed why they were the tournament’s top team through the first two days, getting a goal from Timi Lahtinen and two from Julius Honka to turn a two-goal deficit into a one-goal lead just 11:29 into the second period.

But Shattuck refused to go away, as Jake Montgomery tied the game just 54 seconds after Honka’s second goal, sending it to the dressing room deadlocked at 3-3 after 40 minutes.

The Sabres continued their momentum early in the third, creating a pair of power play opportunities, but Kinnunen jumped on a loose puck in the Shattuck zone and slipped a backhand past Kyle Hayton for the game’s final goal, leaving the Finns a perfect 3-0.
