HICKETTS’ WINNER CAPS WILD GAME, GIVES OKANAGAN WIN OVER SHATTUCK

CALGARY, Alta. – Day 1 of the inaugural World Sport School Challenge came to a close with undoubtedly the wildest game of the day, as Joseph Hicketts’ goal with 1:36 to go helped Okanagan Hockey Academy to a 7-5 victory over Shattuck-St. Mary’s on Monday night.

Shattuck came out blazing with a trio of first period goals, capped off by Tyler Vesel’s power play goal with 24 seconds to go to give the Sabres a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes.

But Okanagan Hockey Academy turned the tables in the middle frame, scoring twice with the man advantage to get to within a goal before pulling even very late in the period.

Kienan Scott scored his second of the game just a minute into the third period to give OHA its first lead at 4-3, and the team’s traded goals in the final frame, setting up a wild final three minutes.

Shattuck’s Hunter Fejes scored shorthanded to tie the game with 2:54 to go, but Hicketts struck just 78 seconds later to restore the OHA lead an and empty net goal rounded out the scoring.

Okanagan Hockey Academy looks to carry the momentum into Day 2 on Tuesday as it takes on Finland (5 p.m. MT), while Shattuck will look to rebound against Slovakia in the afternoon contest (1:30 p.m. MT).
