2011 World Sport School Challenge

Edge School for Athletes 3 - Okanagan Hockey Academy 2 (SO)

FERGUSON SCORES SHOOTOUT WINNER TO GIVE EDGE SCHOOL FIRST VICTORY

CALGARY, Alta. – Mitch Ferguson scored the lone goal in the shootout as the Edge School earned its first win of the 2011 World Sport School Challenge, beating Okanagan Hockey Academy 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Despite the win, Edge School finished sixth in the preliminary round, and will face the Mountaineers in a rematch in Thursday’s early quarter-final (1:30 p.m. MT) at the WinSport Canada Athletic & Ice Complex.

The Edge School came out with the momentum in the first period, outshooting OHA 11-6, but it was the B.C. school that got on the board first, as Riley Stadel converted a power play opportunity at the 7:07 mark of the opening frame.

Knowing it needed a regulation victory to avoid the preliminary round basement, the Edge School played with a sense of desperation in the second period, and took a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes on goals four minutes apart from Matt McNair and Tyson Enzie.

Just minutes away from its first victory, the Edge School got into penalty trouble late, and Gage Gorda made it pay with a power play goal with just 4:43 to go to force overtime.

After overtime solved nothing, Ferguson converted the Mountaineers’ first shootout opportunity, and goaltender Jake Tamagi turned away all three OHA shooters he faced to preserve the victory.
