REWUCKI STANDS TALL AS WINNIPEG TOPS CALGARY Make it 53-1 for the Winnipeg Thrashers after a 3-0 win over the Calgary Buffaloes on Monday at the 2008 TELUS Cup, the tournament opener for both teams. Joel Rewucki turned aside all 18 shots he faced – half of those coming in the final 20 minutes – and the Thrashers got goals from Jesse Hall, Cole Pruden and Mark Stone to register a win in their first game ever at the National Midget Championship. Winnipeg rolled to a 49-0 record in Manitoba play, regular season and playoffs, and dropped only a round-robin contest to Notre Dame at the West Region championship. The Thrashers controlled play in the opening 20 minutes, outshooting the Buffaloes 14-3, and took a 1-0 lead when Hall grabbed a loose puck from behind the net and stuffed it past Calgary goaltender Sean Cahill to open the scoring. Hall and Cahill, who made 26 saves in a losing effort, were named player of the game for their respective teams. The Buffaloes came out with more jump in the second period, but still could not beat Rewucki, who made six stops in the middle frame. Pruden doubled the Winnipeg lead late in the period, taking a beautiful cross-crease pass from David Conrad and tapping the puck into the open net behind Cahill. Rewucki was at his best in the final period, making a number of spectacular saves in the dying minutes, including a glove save off a tip from Chris Collins early in the final frame. Stone rounded out the scoring with just 1:38 left on the clock, scoring into an empty net with Cahill on the bench for an extra attacker. The Buffaloes held a 9-7 advantage in shots on goal in the final 20 minutes, but were outshot 29-18 overall. The Pacific Region champions will look to break into the win column on Friday afternoon when they face the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves at 4:00 p.m. ET, while the Thrashers get another tough test when they face the Quebec representatives from Saint-François at 12:00 p.m. ET. |
