Joliette, who kept their playoff hopes alive last night with a win over Streetsville could not cary over any momentum into Thursday’s must win game against Burnaby. The result was a 5-3 loss to the Express and an early exit from the 2006 RBC Royal Bank Cup.

Burnaby opened the scoring at 13:52 of the first on a strange goal. Alex Sciangula slid it out front and the puck hit Max Grassi’s skate and crossed the line. Goaltender Steve Hartley had no chance on the play as one his defenders took him out of the play after being tangled up with Grasse. All he could do was watch as the puck slid over the line. Keith Seabrook then put the Express up by two on the power-play with a hot shot from the point that beat Hartley.

Joliette tried to claw their way back in when they narrowed the lead on a power-play goal at 14:22 of the second. Joliette Captain Alexandre Lamarche banged in the rebound past Matt Gordon off a point shot from Renaud Laprise. However, Burnaby killed their momentum shortly after with their third marker of the night off the stick of Brady Cook. Grassi notched his second of the game early in the third and Cook also scored twice for Burnaby.

Joliette made things interesting with their third goal of the game to reduce Burnaby’s lead to one. Sebastien Gauthier made a nice individual effort and fought off two defenceman to eventually put it top shelf on Gordon.
