Anyone who came into this tournament thinking that the Derbys were an easy target, better think again. The Derbys, are quickly building a reputation as one of the teams to beat. With a thrilling overtime win in Saturday’s opener, they improved to 2-0 after a convincing 3-2 win over the Fort William North Stars.

The Derbys picked up where they left of Saturday night and took a 1-0 lead early in the game on the power-play. Just as the penalty was expiring, Michael Kusy picked up the loose puck in front of the net and slid it past Fort William goaltender Carter Hutton.

Streetsville pressured the puck most of the night and did not look like a team that had just played a gruelling four period game the night before. On the contrary, they looked energized where as it was Fort Williams that looked sluggish at times. “Our goal was to play better every period and we did that. We got better and better every time” said Streetsville head coach Randy Gumbley.

Michael Paolo notched Streetsville’s second goal of the game at 6:53 of the second. Jason Gorrie made a nifty move to avoid a check and slid a pass across to Paolo who roofed his backhand off the crossbar and past Hutton.

Gumbley also raved about his goaltender’s performance “I don’t know if you can get a better game than that. He was pretty outstanding.” David Wilson stopped 30 of 32 shots, including several key saves in the third, en route to being named player of the game.

Streetsville’s third goal came shorthanded as Mike Scheu took advantage of a defensive miscue to break in alone and slid it between Hutton’s legs. The goal was indicative of both teams’ struggles with the man advantage. They were a combined 1/16 on the night.

Kory McEwan broke David Wilson’s shutout bid early in the third when he found the back of the net when he one-timed Denis Morrison’s centering pass. Morrison fought off a check along the boards and slid it out front to McEwan who was all alone. McEwan scored his second of the game to narrow Streetsville’s lead to one on a rebound goal with 30 seconds remaining in the game but it was too little, too late.
