2005 RBC Cup

East 5 West 4 (Second Overtime)

Preliminary Round
May 12, 2005
Weyburn, SK

The Hawkesbury Hawks rode a prime-time performance by Mathieu Picard to a 5-4 double-overtime victory over the Portage Terriers at the Royal Bank Cup Thursday night.

In a contest both teams needed to stay alive, Picard strapped his team on his back, scoring four goals, including the game-winner.

With the win, Hawkesbury (1-3) moves on to play the host Weyburn Red Wings (3-1) in Saturday’s first semifinal. The Terriers, who also finished 1-3, are eliminated by virtue of their head-to-head loss to the Hawks.

Hawkesbury spotted Portage an early goal before kicking into gear with three straight scores. Three of the four first period goals were scored on Hawks power plays.

Penalty killer extraordinaire Chris Benias got Portage on the board at 7:18, intercepting a bad cross-ice pass and beating Hawkesbury goalie Mitch O’Keefe on the shorthanded breakaway.

But the rest of the period belonged to the Hawks, who made life miserable for Terriers goalie Stefan Drew.

Picard got to the Portage goalie first, pounding home a rebound on the power play after Drew kicked out a blast from Mathew Calabrice. Picard got his second of the game on another power play, finishing off a pretty passing play by hitting the top corner with a wrist shot at 15:30. Less than two minutes later, Sean Smyth made it 3-1 for Hawkesbury, capping a nightmare period for Drew. The Portage keeper allowed three goals on only seven shots in the frame.

Portage came out strong to start the second, aided by the fact that Hawkesbury took the first three penalties of the frame. But O’Keefe kept the puck out of the net, stopping Steve Haddon and Jordan McIntyre on the man advantage.

The Terriers finally broke through on the power play at 15:53 of the second when Chris Reykdal scored from the point with one second left on the man advantage. But before the Portage fans had time to sit back down, Picard scored his third of the game, stealing a puck at the Terriers blue line and beating Drew blocker side.

Steve Haddon got Portage back within a goal at 17:43 on a beautiful individual effort. As Hawks defenseman Carl Hudson struggled to handle a bouncing puck, Haddon swooped in and stole it. Then, with Hudson draped over his back, Haddon managed to deke O’Keefe and score on the forehand.

Jordan McIntyre brought the Terriers all the way back, scoring on a bad-angle shot 48 seconds into the third period to tie the game 4-4.

Neither team mustered much during the first overtime. Early in the second extra frame, the goal light flashed behind O’Keefe after several Terriers crashed the crease, but the referee waved the goal off.

Three minutes later, Terriers defenseman Sean Kliewer tripped Massimo Alfieri as the Hawks forward sped in on a partial breakaway, leading to the first and only penalty of overtime. Once again, Picard made Portage pay, taking a centering pass from Tom Mele and firing a low shot inside the left post to end the game. It was his third power play goal of the game.

With his four-goal explosion, Picard took over the Royal Bank Cup goal-scoring lead with six goals in four games. No other player in the tournament has more than three goals.

Players of the game were Hawkesbury’s Picard and Steve Haddon of Portage.
