2005 RBC Cup

West 3 Central 6

Preliminary Round
May 11, 2005
Weyburn, SK

The Georgetown Raiders laid an old-fashioned beating on the Portage Terriers at the Royal Bank Cup Wednesday, outshooting the Terriers 47-23 en route to a 6-3 victory.

The game belonged to the Raiders from the drop of the puck. Just 35 seconds in, Dan Rogers took a pass in the slot from Kevin Harvey and swatted home his own rebound after Terriers goalie Stefan Drew stopped the initial shot. Jay Sprague gave Georgetown a 2-0 lead at 8:50, when he danced in on the Terriers defense and fired a low shot inside the right post.

Georgetown had fired 16 pucks at Drew before Portage registered their first shot on goal almost 12 minutes in, but the Terriers made the most of it. Jordan McIntyre elected to shoot on a two-on-one break, and hit the top right corner with a picture-perfect shot.

Georgetown restored the two-goal lead on a power play goal from Robert Sgarbossa at 16:29. They thoroughly dominated the period, outshooting the Terriers 19-3.

Georgetown proved that the first period was no fluke when Kevin Harvey made it 4-1 only 33 seconds into the frame. Portage drew within two on McIntyre’s second goal of the game, but they would get no closer. Glen Hartwell’s low shot from the slot snuck under Drew’s pad at 9:47, and Richard Hornseth undressed a Terriers defenseman with an inside-out move and roofed the puck over Drew at 15:11. Portage’s Leif Thorkelson scored late in the period, but Georgetown took a 6-3 lead into the intermission.

Both teams went scoreless in the third period. The Raiders share a 2-1 preliminary round record with the host Weyburn Red Wings and the Camrose Kodiaks. Portage fell to 1-2.

Players of the game were Kevin Harvey of Georgetown and Jordan McIntyre of Portage.
