2005 RBC Cup

Cental 3 East 0

Preliminary Round
May 9, 2005
Weyburn, SK

The Georgetown Raiders managed a 3-0 Royal Bank Cup win over the Hawkesbury Hawks Monday night in a game where their lack of discipline was trumped by Hawkesbury’s lack of a power play.

From the drop of the puck, Georgetown players paraded to the penalty box as if drawn by a magnet. The Raiders took three straight penalties right off the bat, and despite coach Dan Cameron’s best efforts to calm them down by calling a timeout 4:04 into the game, they would take four more penalties before the period was through.

Fortunately for the Raiders, Hawkesbury’s power play let them off the hook. The Hawks failed to generate much in the way of scoring chances, despite two extended two-man advantages.

Despite playing a man down for much of the first, the Raiders actually managed to outshoot the Hawks 10-9 in the frame, and took a 2-0 lead into the first intermission on goals by Michael Gurtler and Matt Sweazy.

Georgetown’s parade to the penalty box continued early in the second period, but once again, Hawkesbury failed to capitalize. To make matters worse, they allowed Georgetown to go up 3-0 on a rare power play, when Raiders defenseman Tyson Gimblett scored at 16:49.

The Raiders stormed the penalty box again towards the end of the period, and the Hawks finally responded, managing their first meaningful scoring chances. But Raiders goalie John Barrow stopped a Mathieu Picard one-timer in his first real test of the night, and moments later, the Hawks rang a shot off the post.

The Hawks never really threatened during a penalty-marred third period. All told, Georgetown amassed 19 minor penalties, plus game misconducts to Dan Rogers and Kevin Harvey. Hawkesbury went 0-17 on the power play, while Georgetown went 2-10.

Georgetown moved to 1-1 for the tournament, while Hawkesbury fell to 0-2.
Players of the game were John Barrow for Georgetown and Nicolas St-Pierre for Hawkesbury.
