Hockey Accomplishments

  • Currently serves as senior vice-president of hockey operations with the NHL
  • Served as chairman of the Hockey Hall of Fame Selection Committee from 1998-2014
  • Hired as executive director of hockey operations for the NHL in 1986
  • Introduced video goal reviews to the NHL
  • Was director of NHL Central Scouting from 1979-86
  • Was an advisor on player personnel decisions with Canada’s National Junior Team in the early days of the Program of Excellence (1981-85)
  • Was general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs from 1969-79
  • One of the first GMs to sign European talent, including Borje Salming
  • Was a scout with the Maple Leafs in 1968-69
  • Helped the Maple Leafs reach the playoffs eight times in 10 years as GM
  • Was head coach of the Vancouver Canucks of the WHL (minor pro) in 1967-68
  • Won the Memorial Cup as head coach of the Toronto Marlboros in 1964
  • Won the Memorial Cup as general manager of the Toronto St. Michael’s Majors in 1961
  • Got his start at St. Michael’s College as a stats keeper and trainer thanks to Father David Bauer
